By the 90s, classic rock radio had taken control and every artist with a substantial catalog found that they were competing against their own classics, which were being played around the clock and inspiring solo drivers to "sing along" at full blast. Even the radio ads in those days promotoed "knowing all the words," regardless of format. For some reason, people are now afraid of the new and hold on to the oldies with a death grip. Sleeps with Angels may not sound like Harvest or Decade, but it's an absolutely magnificent, towering achievement and a monument of Young's genius. Maybe no one expected another masterpiece just 5 years after the equally genius Freedom, but make no doubt about it, Sleeps With Angels gives Freedom a run for its money. The only reason Sleeps With Angels isn't at the top of any list of Neil Young classics is because Neil Young fans were flocking to reissues of Harvest and Rust Never Sleeps. If you're one of those fans you owe it to yourself to buy this masterpiece and find out what you missed while you were humming along to "Old Man" for the 3,000th time. SIDE NOTE TO REPRISE RECORDS: The name of the 2nd track is, in fact, "Prime of Life," not "Prime of Love."

Bought this when it came out in 1994 ... I remember the word was it was about Cobain's death. It is haunting and way over looked. Was reading a review (it think in Rolling Stone) of the 10 best NY albums ... this one wasn't mentioned, it should have been. But then NY has so much quality work out there this probably isn't the only album of his that can make a case for 10 best in any list. NY is a national treasure ...

Definitely one of his best albums in my opinion, especially the new classic song "Change Your Mind". Totally beautiful and mesmerizing and you can listen to it forever except for "Piece of Crap" which is in fact, itself, a piece of crap. Luckily with an iTunes album it can just be deleted or moved to his next album, "Mirror Ball" where it sounds OK.

I am a huge Neil fan. I am not sure how I missed this album. It is my new favorite. Neil Young I Iove you and your music. We played Heart of Gold at our wedding in 1975 and it is one of my favorites.

Neil young is my favorite songwriter, and this album kind of went under the radar. the skill that went into these dark, emotional songs is profound.
cobain was dead before I was born, and i am a huge fan of nirvana, not because of the style, but because the music is great. Neil young really respected Kurt in this way as well and this is a great tribute to his life and his unfortunate death
An overlooked masterpiece

As a long time, diehard Neil fan, I bought this album when it was first released in 1994. It got almost no attention. Neil wouldn't talk about it, did not tour on it, and there was some indication it was his response to Kurt Cobain's suicide. Now it's almost completely forgotten, but I'm glad to see it's here. This is dark, complex music bursting with emotion (with a few exceptions like Piece of Crap, which frankly comes out of nowhere but I'm giving it 5 stars anyway). Neil has never released another album like it, but I'm convinced it's among his best, up there with Tonights the Night and After the Gold Rush. If you are a Neil fan but like so many of us skipped the early and mid-1990s, pick up this one. And then go buy Ragged Glory.
