I recently had the pleasure of seeing Neil live a couple weeks ago and I have to admit, when I saw that he was going to play many of the songs from this album on his set list I was somewhat disappointed. The songs just seemed so noisy (pun intended) and I was wishing he’d play more of his old wonderful acoustic classics, however, when seeing him play these songs in concert and feeling the music, this album because absolutely amazing to listen to. “Peaceful Valley Boulevard” is probably my favorite as it hearkens back to the same sentiment found in “After the Gold Rush.” Just a cool album to listen to when you are cruising down the road.

In the recent Rolling Stones top 100 artists of all time issue, Flea describes Neil Young's music as raw, saying that Neil doesn't always take the time to make the music perfect, because it's about the emotion of where he is at the time. This is probably why Neil has lasted for so long, continuing to grow and evolve when most of the bands of his era are either retired or playing their same old tired hits from 40 years ago. In Le Noise, we see Neil in his rawest form. The majority of the album is distorted guitar and vocals with no backing band of any kind. You get the feeling that you're in the room with Neil and it's just him, his amp, and his guitar. To take the feel of the album up a notch the album is mixed and edited by Lenois (hence the title). Lenois adds layers and unique atmospheres to the album by looping and layering the raw tracks that Neil gave him. The product is a fairly short album, but with lots of good songs, and an over all good feel. If you're enough of a Neil fan to own the "Deadman Soundtrack" then you'll probably dig this album. "walk with me", "sign of love", and "love and war" are probably the most noteworthy songs, but get the album as a whole.

Well, I finally got around to sitting and listening to this Le Noise CD from Neil. It's too bad for Neil that he wrote that song "Piece of Crap" because it's right there for the taking when describing his last 2 or 3 CD's. What a freekin' Piece of Crap! I thought I was listening to Blue Cheer!! Hey Neil, not a decent melody line in any of the songs, the lyrics are, well, quite frankly embarassingly bad, and the relentless, foggy feedback laden 'guitar work' sounds like you are playing through a pillow or maybe a soggy bowl of raisin bran. Jeez, go back to working on that archival reissue thing before you soil your reputation so much that nobody wants to try that stuff out.

I got this the other day and just listened to it today on my ipod. This is wonderful. It is the kind of music that comes from genius with the kind of lyrics that come after many decades of living real life. Great sounds. Incredible mix. Meaningful lyrics. This is the kind of message you want to send to the world. So good.

My wife thought something was wrong with the speakers, I just smiled and turned it up. By now you either love Neil Young or you don't. Who else would use a song with the vocals missing a high note? It is a treat everytime Mr. Young releases new music and this album is no exception.
