Why 'Heartbeats Accelerating'wasn't a huge hit for her I'll never know, it was one of her last hits and she definitly left the charts with a BANG! I love that one so much. That is the biggest highlight of the album but another is the closing and title track co-written by Linda. You can really hear what a range she has on that one. There was no other voice in music like her's and I miss it greatly. She also does some amazing covers including 'Do What You Gotta Do' & 'Til My Tears All Run Dry'
  • Another vocal showcase

Ah, the days when voices weren't auto-tuned. This album is another showcase for Linda's strength and clarity as a vocalist. Yes, radio didn't grab onto this album...probably because it wasn't full of pop tunes. Instead, her vocals are outstanding on each track. Do What You Gotta Do, I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself (amazing!!), and A River For Him are all great...but so is the entire album.
  • A sadly overlooked Album

Beautiful, eclectic, and has all of Lyle Lovett’s large band in hand. If you saw “The Secret Garden” (1993) you will be happy to hear the finest album Linda has ever produced.

Well at least Linda's cover of Oh No, Not My Baby made it on the radio back in 1994 (Top 30 Adult Contemporary hit). But what a voice in that song! So glad she was around in my lifetime. Thank you Linda!

Even if I disagree with Allmusic (where the review comes from) with a lot of things, I agree that this is underrated. It's really beautiful, and it's one of my personal favorite albums from Linda Ronstadt. It contains mystical and atmospheric soundscapes, but it also has some great interpretations of recognizable pop/rock hits. The title track is amazing. I don't usually remember ballads that don't have some form of recognizable tempo, so this is unique in that the melody and Linda's stellar vocals really makes it stand out in my mind. It is definitely a hauntingly beautiful track. There's still a lot of other tracks I love on this as well. "Heartbeats Accelerating" creates a great atmospheric soundscape, and I love her interpretations of "Oh No, Not My Baby", "Anyone Who Had A Heart", "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" and "You Can't Treat The Wrong Man Right." Heck, the entire album is worth a listen.

I agree with the previous reviewer; Linda is an often-overlooked gem whose talent will no doubt continue to be not fully appreciated until we have lost it forever. This album is full of her usual remakes but these are of a different era, more recent than the big-band tunes she did on earlier albums, and will be a delight to many who recognize them. As stated, her voice is clean and clear, and her ability to convey emotion cuts to the core of a listener's heart. A favorite song is "Winter Light", which plays in the movie "The Secret Garden" and is achingly, hauntingly beautiful. My main criticism is that Linda doesn't seem to know when enough is enough, dragging the song out and repeating the chorus ad nauseam. Stop while you're ahead, Linda! :)

As with just about everything Linda Ronstadt has put out in the past 20 years, this album is SO underrated!! Because of her pop status, which led to her Top 40 hits being played to death (!), no one stopped to really LISTEN to Linda's incredible, pure, clear VOICE! If you did not know it was Linda Ronstadt, you'd be saying "Who is THAT?!?!?!?" This album is classic, classic, classic - and absolutely beautiful :-)
