Brilliant by any standard. Could be the best music effort of the 80’s and it will always be a classic.
  • By Far the Best Alernative Alum of the Eighties

By FAR...the single BEST recording ever released among any of the alternative bands from the 80's. Hands down. Period. End of story. Close the book. Stick a fork in it. It's DONE. Funny thing is...is that this particular release from The Smiths is actually....a compilation! A comilation of live session recordings throughout England, such as the Kid Jensen show, the jolly BBC, the legendary John Peel sessions, all recorded in '83. If you don't have this record (CD), you simply MUST obtain it for your collection. I say this to the alternative music lover and metalhead alike; it is THAT necessary. Because if you are a metalhead, then the guitar player for The Smiths is someone you really, REALLY ought to know about, at the very least. Mr. Marr is a guitar GENIUS, and if you are such as one to LOVE the heavy guitar...then look no further than this band--Johnny Marr is deceptive in his guitar genius. BUY THIS ALBUM!!!

This compilation of singles and radio takes perfectly encapsulates what made the Smiths' name when they first arrived in Manchester and the UK. The studio singles are perfect--punchy and bright and sounding nothing like what was on the radio at the time. Conversely, the radio session versions of songs contained on the first album are stronger and harder-hitting, providing a good indication of what they must have sounded like in concert then. Oh, and did I mention that this is the record that originally contained "How Soon Is Now?" It's worth it for that alone.

The Smiths lineup solidified autumn 1982. By May of 1983 they were great, as you can tell by listening to the astonishing Peel Sessions tracks. Skip the first studio album entirely and favor this collection. These versions showcase not just the personality of the singer but the fantastic band working together brilliantly.
