This is probably the most listened to album in library. Every single song has such feel and emotion that words cannot describe. Whether it be the slow and moody "the dirty monk" to the melodic "adoration" to the quirky "6/8" this album has it all. By far one of the greatest jazz albums of the century!
  • DON'T DO IT LIKE THAT KEV!!!!!

It probably took Kev some deep down soul searching to leave the Leno show. I'm sure the salary was quite comfortable. And I assumed he would produce a super commercial offering having played so much of that stuff on the show. But here I am pleasantly surprised at his 1st release after the long stay on the show. It has a hint of fusion, but theres Jazz and a little of everything mixed in. I am enjoying this CD more with every listening. Hope the next one is as good...or better!!!

Before his run with the 'Tonight Show' I enjoyed Eubanks' music: superb artistry seasoned with spiritual themes. Like Pat Metheny, his albums were those you put on when you want to relax and take a slow, long, trip in your mind. 'Zen Food' is a welcome return to that wonderful artistry Eubanks displayed before settling in with Jay. Like riding a bike, great musicians never lose it, or Eubanks was hiding in the back lot at the studios playing and practicing since every cut of 'Zen Food' is clean, crisp, expressive, and unique. As a Catholic kid the melody of 'Adoration' is practically grafted onto our DNA from all those years of attending Mass at school as well as Sundays! Eubanks' acoustic interpretation of that sacred melody is as uplifting spiritually as the original. Welcome home, Mr. Eubanks; we missed you, yet are now pleased and satisfied with this soulful nourishment you've created for us. "Can I have some more?"
  • Oh, YEAH!

I heard Kevin's group live at the Baked Potato a couple years ago, and even though I had a couple of his earlier albums, I was not prepared for what I heard from a range of about 4 feet. It was most definitely not the court jester persona into which Jay Leno pushed him. He sounded like this album sounds - tasty, soulful, powerful, and completely in command. It was also an amazing blues performance, as is this. Eubanks digs in like few other players, especially on acoustic guitar. He gets all the way down and sometimes his blues phrasing and timing can send shivers through your spine. Just buy the album already - great writing, great variety, awesome playing. Kevin, you RULE, man!

I have several Kevin Eubanks CD's and they are all killing like Zen Food. Kevin was never a smooth jazz artist and thank God for that. He has always been aggressive and creative while taking his music to the edge. I was upset when he took the Leno gig because I knew that ridiculously awesome guitar playing would be missed. He's back, just after listening to the first track the CD will have a new home on my iPod.

I saw Kevin the other night on Jay Leno's new show. He preformed a song from his new album. If I had not seen or heard this song I would never have listen to his music. I don't know what his other stuff is like but this Zen album is AWESOME! It reminds me of a little Jeff Beck and some Doors harmony but unique. Must hear if a jazz fan.
  • A Total Surprise

I have to admit-I am totally surprised by this album. I'm not surprised that Kevin Eubanks is an excellent guitarist,I am surprised at the direction that he took. Being my cynical self I would have thought Kevin would have made a smooth jazz(nothing against smooth jazz) album, seeing how he was on the Tonight Show and thinking about where to go after he left that gig. He totally steps it up and makes an album with a musical statement for the future. He is a force to be reckoned with. I look forward to hearing him play this music live

Considering Kevin has been leading a late night TV show band for almost two decades it's a testimony to his talent that he can produce such an outstanding new album straight out of the gates. No schmaltz, smooth jazz or commercial filler here. Every cut is unique, harmonic, challenging and refreshing. If this is anything like what his future output will be like a number of leading jazz guitarists will now have some healthy competition. Go Kevin!
