I loved Patti Smith in my 20's and have fallen in love with her music again in my 50's. The acountic version of these songs and her insight bring a differnt point of view that I have enjoyed. The acoustic versions allow her poetry to come more to the front, but always accomapnied by ever soulful voice. Loved the earlier renditions and love tehse ina new way. Simply a joy.
She's Come a Long Way

I remember seeing Patti Smith in places like CBGB's and Max's Kansas City way back when and she has come a long way since then. She's gone from a hard edged, take no prisoners singer to this soulful bluesy crooner. She still sings every song with the same feeling that made people listen to her in the first place, it's just a lot more melow and I love it. Great mix of originals and covers.

(once I get past the memory of Gilda Radner's impression of Patti Smith on SNL... I'm good to go) To hear the very personal and intimate comments by this artist as she describes what inspired a given song is simply incredible. I had no idea it was Jeff Buckley singing in the background of "Beneath the Southern Cross" as she sings "cross over boy, cross over". Her Appalachian/Bluegrass rendition of Nirvana's "Smells like Teen Spirit" is one of my favorite covers of that song, the distinct initial two notes and use of the (all American) banjo throughout is priceless.

I had thought that all of the songs were different versions. WRONG! It seems excessive that one has to pay 12 bucks mainly for songs that one already has. Sure, Patti introduces each song, but there's not much new information to be gleaned from them, and they'll probably be boring after several listens. In hindsight I wish that I had only downloaded 3 songs, "P*****g In A River," "Ghost Dance" and "Tara/Peaceable Kingdom." As someone who was very disappointed with her last album, it further disappoints me that fully half of the iTunes Originals exclusive songs are from "Twelve." Fool me once, shame on Patti, fool me twice, shame on me.

I love to hear Patti talk- it was funny to hear her thanking everyone for her only hit-Because the Night-as if her body of work doesn't stand far above any idea of a pop hit. I suppose that there is a monetary difference. I missed Nirvana's popularity wave but look back anew with Patti's appreciation of Kurt Cobain and I played her version of Teen Spirit many times. It sounds like something she would have written herself. This is a great collection of chat and music from a goddess of Rock!

So yeah, alot of you haters out there dont feel that we were being very fair. We are just voicing out opinions, you cant blame us that she sounds like a transvestite. She Cannot Sing. Her songs are all horrible, and there is even one of her talking where we were convinced she was a man. Do we dare say it......we dare......YOUR TACKY AND WE HATE YOU!!!!!

I first saw Patti Smith at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago following the release of Horses, one of the best albums released in the 70's. Her literate punk music was a great alternative to the plastic pop and disco dredge on the airwaves at the time. This collection has some great original versions. I've read her poetry and interviews, but it is special to hear her talking about the origins and feelings behind these songs. If you like these, check out her other work - especially Horses, Radio Ethiopia and Easter - but also the later works - especially Trampin' - as great as she ever was!

I was lucky enough to catch the PSG at the Santa Monica Civic in the late seventies and experience their fantastic repertoire and Patti's legendary style and poetic chic. A collection of their best work and some new additions with narratives interspersed to give context and to add some nice backstories that stand behind them. The reworked songs for the most part are good but somehow it is nearly impossible for any band to recreate the magic that was the sum of so many influences for the originials. Spotty at best but for the diehard a worthy purchase
