  • why compare?

This is a really great cover. So many people are comparing it to the Stones' version, like it's a race or a competion. I don't think the artists feel that way. Well, maybe a little (and some of them a lot), but it feels more like she did such a great version because of what the song has meant to her, so it's just enough tribute and just enough patti to stand on its own, with no aspiration to outdo the original. The whole album's like that.

    Only one song? Really?
  • NEARLY Surpasses the Original Version

This new single by Patti Smith (Who, though she is getting kind of old by this point, is still sounding great and still knows how to rock) is a piece from her newest album, Twelve, consisting of all covers. This "Gimme Shelter" is taken from The Rolling Stones' version, from their Let It Bleed (1969) album. Now, first off, is it as good as The Rolling Stones'? No, not quite. But, after all, how many covers do we know that are better than the original version? Still, Smith's version is just as intense and just as raw as The Rolling Stones' was, granted it sounds more modern and her voice is a bit more gravelly and deep. This particular cover has its upsides. Mainly that it allows the listener to actually understand what the lyrics are. (I don't know about any of you, but I couldn't understand a word of the original. But I still love it.) Also, that intro is totally awesome. Personally, I think we could've been a bit better served with a different pick off her Twelve album (Namely "Within You Without You" by The Beatles or "Are You Experienced?" by The Jimi Hendrix Experience), but "Gimme Shelter" is still a good cover, satisfying the listener and remind them of what a punk rocker she was back in the day. Recommended Tracks: (The minimum number of tracks I like to recommend is two, but since there's only one, being a single, I guess I'll recommend that one:...) "Gimme Shelter"

This is a single for Patti Smith's new covers-only cd. If this is a good representation of the final album we are all in for a real treat. I just wish she could have added a little more of her own style to the song (it sounds almost exactly like the stones).

Patti Smith does an excellent cover of this song. Lyrics are much easier to understand and the music is well played. Overall I recommend this song for your Ipod.

Okay, if you can all get over the fact that this is not equal to the Stones' original version, you just might enjoy Patti's take on a classic rock song. God, I love her voice.

Love this song. But despite enginner Steve Rosenthal's superb remastering of The Stones original, I can only bare to it about 12 times per year -- and most of those moments are provided by the dead horse-beater that is American corporate rock radio. So G-d bless Patti Smith & her awesome band for a new Gimme Shelter. As a song, it's an important comment, appropriately recycled for wartime. That Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductee Patti Smith pays tribute to an influence at one her biggest moments of significance to pop culture since "Horses" is so cool. War! Children! It's just a shot away.

JUST LET THE STONES DO THE STINES PATTI. THIS VERSION IS JUST PLAIN AWFUL. IT'S AN EMBARRASMENT TO A WELL WRITTEN STONES MASTERPIECE. WHEN YOU RUN OUT OF MATERIAL, JUST QUIT.

This version's exactly what you'd expect so it's just OK, . The definitive cover version belongs to Ashley Cleveland. But really.... why argue over beer when the whiskey costs the same? Buy the original and leave it at that.
