I reinvestigated this album after many years and was greatly impressed. It is a very coherent piece of work, and listening from top to bottom is a cathartic and emotional experience - not surprising given the profound sense of loss that fueled the songwriting. Serious props for the timeless and understated production from Malcolm Burn and Lenny Kaye, the lush sonics, and the beautiful accompaniment from the core band as well as guest musicians such as Tom Verlaine, John Cale, Jeff Buckley, Jane Scarpantoni and Oliver Ray. Patti is the centerpiece though, and this is possibly her best sustained performance ever captured on record.

This Disc, like all of the rest of Patti's work is heart felt and emotionally charged. She conveys her feelings in a manner many try but few reach. In every song on every album you will find a song..a certain tune that brings out the raw feelings inside of you that you are trying to repress..to bury. Let yourself go and meld with her and become wrapped in the words and you will find it gnawing at you to just let it all go....Since her first Album came out I have been a fan and always will be.

Come on people! Patti Smith deserves more recognition. This album is very depressing. She did it when many loved people of hers died and so you can just imagine how it sounds. Not her best, but still worth it.
