  • Deeply stunning masterpiece.

This album is deeply stunning in its attitude, depth, poetry, darkness and even some snide comedy. Lou is backed by a tight band and the production is great. You have no problem hearing Lou's rhythm guitar playing laying on the top of the songs. Check out Bruce Springsteen on the epic title track. This is a Binaural recording (a kind of 3D recording) so check it out on the headphones.

When I hear lou's singing on this record, I think about someone very weakly stretching a long rubber band, and flicking it until it belts out some tunes. His voice is so shaky and wobbly it sounds like he is trying to sabotage his own record. However, the songs are quality. And with repeated listens, I've grown to enjoy the way Lou sings, his singing just makes the song more entertaining and idiosyncratic. If you're a fan of the VU and Lou, buy this album. It's one of his best solo albums by far. The title track alone is worth the money.

Of all of Lou's solo albums, Street Hassle, though strangely underrated by his fans, is my fave. I have always loved the beautiful, epic-length title song, one of his very very best. I love the way the album goes from that lush chamber orchestra sound to the only-Lou rawk of "Real Good Time Together" and "I Wanna Be Black," two more of my all-time Lou faves, and then to the gritty honky-tonky of "Leave Me Alone," and then to the Veveltsy weirdo-pop of "Wait." Sure, the whole thing sounds drugged-out and slapped-together, but hey, that's Lou at his best.

  • Another Bad Lou Reed Album - and This is Better Than Most

I am a huge fan of the Velvet Underground and one of the great mysteries in music for me is why Lou Reed has released so many terrible solo albums. This one is better than most for him, but still for many songs (Shooting Star, Gimmie Some Good Times, Leave Me Alone) his singing is unlistenable. The same goes with his production techniques. Unlistenable. Compare this album's version of "Real Good Time Together" with the version on The Live 69 Velvet Underground album and you will understand what I mean. I give this two stars because a couple songs I think are good - Wait and I Want to Be Black. The others, pretty awful.

Lou's best solo work. Transcendent. Buy it and then thank God for the opportunity. This is soul-making stuff. Play it a lot and then head for Sunday Meetin' at the Hellfire Club. See ya there!

This is the best of his "Arista" period and arguably his best solo album before he cleaned up, took a break, and released "The Blue Mask" (which is also essential, by the way.)
