I love Jane Monheit's voice, so pure and sweet, and her phrasing is very cool too. She has an honesty to her voice that is rare to find these days, but also very sophisticated at the same time. One of my favorite jazz singers around these days.

A few years back I  came upon Jane Monheit while searching for artist's that had recorded the song "I Wish You Love", a song that had popped into my head while I was playin in the Itunes store. I think it took me 7 seconds to purchase her version, WOW,  and then about two seconds to search her name for anything she may have recorded.. Incredible voice, no doubt, and X-cellent back up bands. A couple of years after I discovered this "one of a kind voice" on I tunes, I came home from work one day to find my other half reading the Metro newspaper. Out of the corner of my eye, I catch the right top column of the open paper, it reads "JANE MONHEIT,  SANTA CRUZ JAZZ CLUB MONDAY NIGHT"... This was a Thursday evening, So I bought tickets Friday afternoon for the Monday show,  the only show. Thinkin, well, I was late getting the tickets so whatever seats we get, we get.. A work night, so she better be good I thought, at least sound somewhat like her Itunes recordings . Well it was a small venue,(about 100, very intimate), a three piece band, she sang mostly tunes from Surrender, (she had just released Surrender, killer download btw!!!!!). We had a front row table, a bottle of local wine,  and she was just six feet away. If you enjoy her voice from your Itunes downloads, all I can say is, OMG,  IF YOU EVER GET THE CHANCE, see her in person, INCREDIBLE, old soul voice, pure, clear, timeless, sings each song as if she lived that era. I am now a fan of something, never have been, but this voice is INCREDIBLE....very appreciated Jane!!!...please do more!!!!

This is the most amazing album ever. She has an amazing amount of control over her voice.

Ms. Monheit's voice is consistent, warm and classy, with almost zero tension. She occasionally sounds subtly hesitant (as in Save Your Love for Me), but it has a minimal impact. At times she does sound a lot like Ella Fitzgerald, except Ms. Monheit's tone has more consistent warmth. This is a beautiful album.

As favorites go, choices can be purely subjective.....when I heard Jane Monheit's version of "Too Late Now", I felt it to be truly one of her best. The very emotion she puts into her breath and spacing on the song "Bill" is also quite moving. Neither of these songs is included here. I can't understand how 2 "previously unreleased" songs can make it onto a "Best Of" collection, when there are other songs worthy of inclusion. That, however, is my only real complaint. Any of these selections merits more than just one listening, whether or not I think they represent her best work.

This reminded me of Mary Martin's rendition in the fifty's. A live telecast of "Peter Pan" played on our black and white television screens. "Never Never Land" and "I Gotta' Crow" were the songs from it that have stuck in my memory. Janet has broght that time back.

I agree w/MilesTrane - although her voice is one of the best on the scene, her renditions never seem sincere enough... I'd prefer a little grain and grit with a load of emotion to her crisp clean embellishements anyday... BUT if you're into flash, get this album!

Best rendition of Over the Rainbow since Judy. Very tasteful selections delivered with a rich and smooth style. This is one of our genre favorites.
