I'm a huge fan of Billie Holiday and have also enjoyed some of Cassandra Wilson's work over the years. I listened to this albumd couldn't stand it---pure butchery of Billlie's memory. So sad.

Ms Wilson is lost in a cesspool of heady haughtiness. She completely misses the essence of Billie Holiday, and Billie's raw emotion. Wilson's interpretations are ridiculous. The beauty of Billie Holiday is in her connection to the listener, or audience and her ability to convey the depths of her soul. Wilson is performing for herself, and trying to be oh so clever that she is simply narcissistic. Ugggh. Don't waste your time, and don't believe the lemmings.

C’mon y’all. Don’t know what you were expecting but she’s still on point to me. That being said, what did this woman do to her HAIR?!!!! YUK & yes, it does matter.

Sultry, Sexy, Salty, Introspective , Cassandra Wilson's latest, the sonic, orchestral ," Coming Forth By Day "presents this once in a lifetime chanteuse at her mesmerizing best. I was floored with her spellbinding "Billie's Blues", and If her "Strange Fruit "doesn't stop you in your tracks ,then you have found yourself in a serious Wilson misunderstanding. She doesn't try to "take on" Billie, she makes each song solidly her own . This is without a doubt Cassandra Wilson's finest moment.
  • Cassandra’s Best CD to Date

You can always count on Cassandra to be an original, whether she is singing Joni Mitchell or Billie Holiday or blues - this CD is excellent. The arrangements are unusual and haunting and as Cassandra said herself, it’s not the usual arrangements that have been done by other jazz singers. I think Billie would enjoy this - it’s unique and creative and sung by Cassandra with the greatest love and respect for Billie. You will not regret buying this. Bless this woman for daring to be different - just like Billie.
  • A perfect tribute to Lady Day

As Cassandra has said in several interviews, merely recreating the mood of Billie’s recordings has already been done…countless times. On “Coming Forth by Day” Cassandra reinvents 11 of Billie’s classics in a fresh and unexpected soundscape. She caresses the songs in her usual low register and producer Nick Launay (Arcade Fire, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds) provides textures that are alternately spooky and soothing, falling somewhere between rootsy pop/rock and juke joint blues. This stunning, completely unexpected tribute album is Cassandra’s best work in a decade.

You will always expect the unexpected with Miss Wilson. She uses her rich deep voice again to pay tribute to the great Billie Holiday and of course, she does it on her own masterful way. Everything is well done here, although it may take a few listenings for all to sink in, and when it does, it’s a very gratifying experience. Thanks again Cassandra.
