If you have enjoyed Robert Plant's new work then John Kilzer's recent album is for you. Memphis soul seasoned with the right amount of blues and country. The perfect album to enjoy by the fire this fall.

Great album. We had to good fortune to hear John Kilzer play at the album kickoff at the reopened Lafayette’s music room in Overton Square. He’s a great performer and held the crowd throughout. See him live if you can. Highly recommend Hide Away.

It has been awhile since I purchased an album, and then upon the first listen, put every single song into my playlist. John Kilzer has perfected the R&B sound, allowed blues to bleed into his voice, and the album’s overall presentation is very polished. 'Hide Away' is acoustically a jewel. The the lyrics are the kind that can move a mountain; it might even move your own heart :-)

from Chris Herrington at The Commercial Appeal: Artist pedigrees don’t get any richer than that of John Kilzer. An ex-basketball star in the ‘70s, he went onto to become college lit professor, then a hotly tipped major label recording artist in the ’80 and ‘90s. After his brush with fame, the ensuing decades saw him fall into alcoholism, only to be saved by finding faith, earning a PhD. in theology and creating a ministerial outreach for addicts in Memphis. That’s the kind of background that could fuel more than a few songs, and Kilzer has stories to share on his latest and arguably best LP, Hide Away. Despite his deep faith Kilzer isn’t one to proselytize on record: the tracks concerning spirituality are more universal in nature like metaphorically rich “The White Rose and the Dove” and the reflective “Love Wants to Give Its Heart To You” (dedicated to his friend and fellow singer, the late Sid Selvidge). Mostly, Kilzer applies a keen lyrical eye to a clutch of tough, evocative rock and folk narratives like “Sleeping in the Rain” and “Graveyard Jones.” He’s aided in that effort by an A-team of Memphis’ best musicians, including guitarists Steve Selvidge, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Luther Dickinson and Bobby Manuel, pianist Rick Steff, bassist Sam Shoup and saxophonist Kirk Whalum, who plays on and co-wrote the Hi Records-style gospel of “Until We’re All Free.”
