This Quad of jazz artists have put together one hell of a good album. This is my first album from this quartet but it will not be my last.

Out of the cast of this generation's standout saxophonists including Kenny Garrett, Chris Potter, Ravi Coltrane, Joshua Redman, Tim Ries, Rick Margitza, James Carter, it's a real treat that Branford Marsalis is the one who most steeps his style with the influence of Sonny Rollins. His fearless playfulness, gorgeous full tone, energetic yet tasteful improvisations make for a truly refreshing collection of material. The band delivers a 5 star performance on every track. All kinds of arguments abound these days as to what is real jazz and if it should be called jazz at all. All that aside, this album stands as a definition for all those who may be confused. The presence of intensity in delivery is here in buckets and does not disappoint. The opening cut "The Mighty Sword" sets the pace for the whole session romping through like knights on a ride; a hip line followed by some MF'ing blowing. The rhythm section is just killing with Branford on soprano as he does most of this recording. Each band member contributes originals to this collection and what comes back is a band, a real band - like those Miles had with Trane and Shorter - NO sidemen here, no star up front, all MF's playing! Here is a recording which could come with a money back guarantee and never have a single return.

I'm so glad there are individuals, like this group, who continue to produce music such as this. I think there is a lot of life that has been shared between these 4MF's for us to appreciate and enjoy. Along the line, the music begins as a fun bounce until you get to "whiplash", which is an excellent name for a tune that gets the blood pumping like you are flying at a 100mph+ in busy traffic. Immediatly after, you must have crashed and awoke floating somewhere between heaven and hell with "As summer into autumn slips". The album ends up nicely with "My ideal" & "Treat it gentle"- both classic sounding tunes of generally better or happier times. Want this in hi-rez? Try the 180g double LP if you can get your hands on it. It is a real treat on vinyl and comes with a digital download to boot. Cheers!

Branford and his crew are swinging elegantly and melodically!!!! I really like the sound of the new young drummer. It's very hard to fill the shoes of the great Jeff "Tain" Watts, but this young fella is smoking!! I am purchasing the cd to avoid buying the compressed iTunes version. iTunes need to offer their music downloads in cd quality (16/44k) & high resolution downloads (24/96k)!
