Unfold is ridiculously amazing!! Great driving music and John, you are a true artist!
  • An erratic set with moments of delight

It seems John O'Callaghan, an artist with whom I've never before been familiar, suffers from an identity crisis on this set. Perhaps he had an overweening ambition to promote himself as a multivalent EDM artist. Whatever the case, this set shifts whimsically between a mercurial energy and an insufferable languor. As long as the tempo ranges from fast to relentless, this set is generally good. The brightest moments are "Stresstest" and "Ride the Wave." But all the vocal tracks and the slower ones are embarrassingly cheesy or cloying, sometimes provoking laughter. The vocals are poor, shallow and often out of place. In one case, the vocal plainly ruins a song. I'd download the two tracks I mentioned as well as "Smokescreen," "Psychic Sensor" and "Centurion." 2.5

JOC is without a doubt in a category of his own. It is refreshing to see a guy write his own work, unlike other trance DJs, at such a high level. Save this moment is the best trance song out this year, in my opinion. Perfection and Mess of a Machine are great works as well with fantastic lyrics and beats. If you want songs to decompress to then you have the downtempo Rhea and Impossible to LIve WIthout You. STresstest if you want to just go nuts or workout. In a nutshell, a masterpiece!
  • He just gets better and better.

As far as I'm concerned, JOC is simply the best trance/EDM artist in the world right now. Every single time he releases something, it's golden. His annual Subculture mix sets are pure genius, and his artist albums (like Unfold) are simply unmatched by almost anyone else out there. This album is just beautiful. There aren't words to describe how awesome it is. JOC takes trance to a whole new level. Buy this album! Then go and buy everything he's ever done. These artists need our support to continue doing what they're doing!
