I have to thank Nina Paley and her terrific film 'Sita Sings the Blues' for introducing me to the music of Annette Henshaw. What a forgotten gem from the Jazz Age.

The 20s were the era of jazz and of course jazz was stolen by whites from the black community, I think looking back music was the only thing that African-Americans and Caucasions loved. I mean, Annette Hanshaw may have stolen Ella Fitzgerald's song "Daddy, Won't You Please Come Home" (it was originally "Baby, Won't You Please Come Home"), but it brought them together. And it happened again with the rock in the 50s. White kids would sneak into concerts and hide in the balconies but once the musicians started playing the white kids joined the black kids in the pit. So the 20s jazz was the first step towards unity between the races and different nationalities.
