The first time I started hearing his albums I didn't know what to think. After a few listens and watching the documentary "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" I began to hear the interesting songwriting Daniel Johnston had. What makes it even more interesting and actually ends up giving the music character an identity is the fact that it's recorded in low quality with a lot of background noise and artifacts. After a while you actually start to associate the low fidelity as part of Daniel's style and it gives it texture. It almost makes it seem like its a personal cassette of a friend you found one day with these strange songs in them. I recommend this album to anyone that likes interesting music. Give it a listen.

I really feel sorry for the people that don't understand this album. It speaks volumes to me about their level of maturity, integrity, and intelligence. It is simplistic yes but brilliantly so. One thing that jumps out at me in the negative reviews is the hate...and that comes out of the frustration of not understanding something. I would say to these people, live a little more, grow a little more and come back to this. When I was younger I would listen to John Coltrane and seriously think I was being duped. Who in there right minds would want to listen to a 30 minute long version of "My favorite Things", I didn't understand. I do now. I think that is where some people are at with Daniel Johnston.
  • Not for Everyone

It takes a certain person to understand this music and what place it comes from. If you listen to a few songs, you'll be able to decide if Daniel is for you or not. It's basically you have to have an ear for it, and if you don't its not that you don't appreciate music, it's just experimental, or lo-if if you will, music isn't really for you.
  • Horrible

Knows nothing of writing. Can't hit any of the beats. Blind to any vocal melody. Recording was terrible. Can't make out any of the background music. Could be done by a five year old and a play school music set.

But in my opinion this is awful. It's hard to listen to. I'm in to a variety music including very alternative or folk music, with a very raw sound. This is sincere, but I can't fathom the level of production. I don't like his voice either. Not my cup of tea. As a musician myself, I simply cannot stand his tonedeafness. It's like a slap in the face. This is so off.
