  • Classical Virtuosity with an International Flair

These brothers have been playing together - at first on a single guitar - for the great part of their lives. Sergio is a splendid arranger, Odair a virtuoso performer. They have taught master classes at the University of Arizona and are very impressive emissaries for their instrument. This album draws heavily on their Brazilian roots, but the absolute highlight is their realization of Gershwin's Rhapsody.

I don't know what or who these brothers are channeling, but I like it. This album always takes me out of what I am doing and right into the music. Who woud have thought that Rhapsody in Blue could sound so fresh?...as if you had never heard the song before. And in their hands, Debussy seems contemporary and alive. Great album.
  • My Favorite!

Composers from very different cultures separated by centuries in time speak with a beautifully intertwined language through the voice of these phenomenal interpreters. Of profound beauty, it pleases the heart and the mind. My favorite CD. It is on constant replay and will not age.

This album was recently reviewed on NPR and I was so inspired by the bits I heard that I went straight home and bought the download. At the risk of sounding like a philistine, I had no idea that the guitar was so versatile and instrument. Each piece is really a revelation of all the guitar is capable. One doesn't put this album on as background mood music; it challenges and demands from the go. The listener hears, throughout the recording, the guitarists' intakes of breath, and is reminded that this music is only RECORDED in a studio, but is CREATED in the deeper parts of these artists' souls. "Scaramouche: Brazileira" is a succinct thrill. "Rhapsody in Blue"? How can a piece so familiar and so linked to the fabric of Americana be so deftly re-interpreted while sacrificing none of its integrity? That kind of balancing act is what reveals Sérgio and Odair Assad as imaginative artists performing at their peak. For the unitiated or casual listener, which I most assuredly am myself, this music delivers excitement and life, but it is always approachable.

If you are a purist. It doesn't get purer than this. Two Guitars that sounds like a Classical Guitar Quintet, Brazilian style. Check out Rhapsody in Blue
