  • A superb recording of the Valses

Tharaud plays the Valses as I imagine Chopin himself played them. Each is rendered with just the right touch, neither too light nor too heavy, and his use of dynamics is superb, the music nearly dying off in places, then coming back strong. Tharaud's performance traverses the musical landscape, slowing down in places as if to wring out every bit of emotion, and exhibiting excitement in the faster passages. Some pianists chop off notes at the very end of a phrase, but Tharaud lets the tone ring. There is not a tone out of place, nothing to jar--Tharaud clearly understands Chopin on a visceral level. This recording is lovely, the perfect companion for an afternoon of quiet contemplation.
