YUNA - A GLOBAL SENSATION

Last week , May 2020, I noticed Itunes was promoting a $4.99 album sale. Ever the minimalist, I browsed, half interested. Until, that is, when I was shaken from the sleep of owned that, heard that pop radio indifference as Malaysian Yuna (my own note to separate every other Yuna apart from her) began to belt out the addictive, infectious choruses from, Favorite Thing and, especially, meaningful, Loud Noises.
I was proud of finding her catalogue and this eponymously titled album without any prompts or cues from the mass media.
Favorite Thing, like evidently, all of the other tracks on Yuna, is a slice of her life describing her man: how he drinks coffee, or snaps unguarded moments with the camera; the little things that matter. The playfulness eases ( like a relationship will) into the real merits of a relationship: supporting, comforting, loving.
There is an easy rhythm. None of the artifice of tortured words mangled to fit somewhere in the song. There is a sweetness about it that I find enjoyable.
My favorite thing😂 apologies, track has got to be Loud Noises! The moroseness of the lyrics leads to a crescendo of sound that wakes you from painful loss pulling you out of the dark funk suffocating you because of your best friend holding onto you. Yes, I say emphatically, your memories will be treasured and you are important to me.
I’m an emotional person and I’ve cried a lot listening to Loud Noises because I know about pain and loss.
I really have loved the entire Yuna album. So many different instrumentation: ukulele, simple guitar, synthesizer; and so many genres from tropical, reggae-inspired, Island, among other gems.
I don’t work in the music industry so I’m writing a review based on my emotional response to Yuna’s assertive and confident writing and her beautiful singing. I wish that more people will take this English language album home with them because you will not be disappointed. I know I will buy her Rouge album soon.
