  • ASK YOUR MAMA

ASK YOUR MAMA is too smart, too soulful, too hip for these times — all the more reason it must be heard, repeatedly, at dusk when the wine is poured, before dawn when the first cup of coffee is drawn, when the mind is open and free to receive its distillation. Karpman pulls your heart through your ear, she brings forth the depths, the majesty, “it must be a struggle”, what a commingling….Follow her lead, she takes you where you want to go. Truly. This is a boogie-trip into the future-past, a shamanic ramble, a rollercoaster blues ride. Buckle up, unleash your reservations, and prepare for ASK YOUR MAMA. It’s the sound of Truth.

Langston Hughes' brilliant text brilliantly set. Together the music and the poetry are full of wit, pathos, insight, sorrow, defiance, and jaw dropping beauty.

A perfect marriage of music and poetry, Laura Karpman’s “Ask Your Mama” brings Langston Hughes’ moving text to life. The performance is also stellar. A must-listen.

A wonderful celebration of music, poetry, and song. I just love it. I heard it at the Hollywood Bowl, loved it then, and love this recording.

This album crosses so many musical genres. The spoken word poetry by Langston Hughes is really brought to life, and the collaboration between all the artists like Questlove, Nnenna Freelon and the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra has really expanded my musical repertoire. Emmy-winner Laura Karpman is a genius. It’s just a really good album.
