Details Revealed by Onyeka Onwenu’s Son Regarding Her Passing

Following the death of the renowned singer, Onyeka Onwenu, her sons Abraham and Tijani Ogunlende shared insights into the circumstances surrounding her demise on Tuesday, July 30, 2024. In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 31, they disclosed that she was swiftly taken to the hospital after a performance. Despite the medical team’s best efforts, she did not survive. The sons also expressed appreciation to the governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, and the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for their assistance.

They conveyed their sentiments as follows: “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, the esteemed Onyeka Onwenu. She left us on the night of Tuesday, July 30, 2024, in Lagos, Nigeria.

“After an exceptional final performance, she was rushed to the hospital where medical professionals endeavored to save her life… regrettably, she succumbed.

“Onyeka Onwenu was a national treasure, an icon, and a legend, who touched the hearts of numerous generations of Nigerians and people worldwide through her music, acting, charitable activities, and humanitarian work.
She is deeply cherished and sorely missed.

“We extend our gratitude to those who stood by her in her last moments. Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to the public for their care and support.

“In particular, we are profoundly thankful for Mr. Peter Obi, Mr. and Mrs. John Momoh, Mr. and Mrs. Okonkwo, as well as Messrs Ajayi and Mr. Okpara, who were with her during her final hours.

“Governor Alex Otti offered his condolences promptly after her passing.

“We also acknowledge the efforts of Reddington Hospital and its staff. While we make necessary arrangements, we urge everyone to reflect on her life, the positive impact she had, and the lives she touched, including our own.”
