Veteran Fuji artist, Adewale Ayuba, recently shared his experience of contemplating a career change from music to academia while residing in the United States in the late 1990s. Ayuba revealed that his sojourn to the US in 1995 with his band was extended due to threats from the late military ruler, Sani Abacha, which prevented them from returning to Nigeria.
During a conversation with Teju Babyface, Ayuba disclosed that the Nigerian military government had targeted him following the release of an album advocating for the release of political detainees like the late MKO Abiola. Reflecting on his time in the US, he mentioned enrolling in school, obtaining American citizenship, and contemplating a shift towards academia amidst uncertainties about his music career.
“My stay in America from 1995 to 1998 was filled with challenges and opportunities. I utilized my weekdays for educational pursuits while performing shows on weekends. This period allowed me to establish a strong foundation and eventually become a citizen of the United States.”
“My experience in America made me question my future in Fuji music. I envisioned a career in education, aspiring to become a lecturer or teacher, a path I have always been drawn to.”
Responding to inquiries about his wavering interest in Fuji music, Ayuba confirmed his contemplation of transitioning to academia:
“Indeed, I considered pursuing higher education and envisioning a role as a lecturer. While acknowledging my achievements in Fuji music, I found myself drawn to the idea of exploring new paths while in America.”
