In the upcoming release of his album When I’m Called, folk musician Jake Xerxes Fussell has already shared tracks like “Going To Georgia” and “Leaving Here, Don’t Know Where I’m Going,” and now he introduces “Gone To Hilo” to the audience today.
Fussell reflects on the nature of sea shanties, suggesting that these songs may have transcended their original purpose over time. He muses on the ambiguity and intrigue surrounding the lyrics and their references to places like Hilo and Rye-o, leaving room for interpretation and speculation within the folk music genre.
The track features Fussell on vocals and guitar, with Robin Holcomb providing harmony vocals, James Elkington on organ and pedal steel guitar, Blake Mills on acoustic guitar, Ben Whiteley on bass, and Joe Westerlund on drums. Experience the song below.
When I’m Called will be available on 7/12 through Fat Possum.
