The renowned American rock group Wussy is set to release a new album. After a six-year break, they will return in November with Cincinnati Ohio, their first LP since the passing of guitarist John Erhardt. The lead single “The Great Divide” has just been unveiled, offering a vibrant and engaging sound that feels like waking from a dream.
Lisa Walker from Wussy shared her thoughts on the song:
Writing the lyrics was a challenge for me. It delves deep into the intricacies of loss. It reflects on what we leave behind and how we continue to express ourselves even after we’re gone. It’s remarkable how small items, like an old hard drive or a guitar cable, can hold significant meaning. There’s a poignant realization that something borrowed can’t be returned because the person is no longer with us. Crafting this song has been part of a grieving journey that we’re still navigating, but I feel that working on it has aided that process.
Most of the new album’s tracks were composed a few years ago before recording began. However, “The Great Divide” stands out as it was created more recently. I had the melody and chords since 2019 but hadn’t finalized any lyrics until just before our recording sessions. I shared a demo with the band, thinking it could either conclude the album or be saved for the future. Joe [Klug] really believed in it and even set up his drums again just to capture it with the full band’s energy. Without the enthusiasm and dedication from the band and John Hoffman, this song would not have come together in this way.
On the same day as the Cincinnati Ohio release, Wussy will also put out two EPs titled The Great Divide and Cellar Door. The latter, which features Wussy Duo—Walker and Chuck Cleaver—has its title track released today as well. (If you missed Wussy Duo’s recent Bill Fay cover, give it a listen!)
