Crowning, a trio hailing from Chicago and featuring Lowell Shaffer from Frail Body, is a significant name in the vibrant screamo scene. They’re known for their willingness to collaborate on split releases with other groups. Having already produced several splits, their latest project comes two years after their collaboration with Baltimore’s Eyelet, and this time they join forces with a Japanese band.
Prior to this collaboration, I was not acquainted with Oaktails, the Japanese screamo band that debuted their album What I Think / What I Love last year. However, that’s no longer the case. Crowning contributes two impressive tracks, “Luxor Surrealism” and “Jung Money, Freud Problems,” both showcasing intense metal riffs, soaring crescendos, and lively energy, complemented by fantastic titles. Meanwhile, Oaktails counters with “Winter Call” and “Dazzling Dress,” which might even be more intensely expressive. You can listen to the split below.
