Chaz Bear, under the moniker Toro Y Moi, is set to launch his upcoming album titled Hole Erth next month, featuring collaborations with artists such as Porches, Glaive, Kenny Mason, and Don Toliver. Two new songs from the album have been released today, with one of them being a joint effort with Ben Gibbard.
In the track “Hollywood,” Ben Gibbard from Death Cab For Cutie and The Postal Service provides backing vocals, adding a melancholic touch that blends well with Chaz Bear’s unique rap-infused style, reminiscent of Lil Peep. Bear expressed, “I’ve been a fan of Ben’s music for some time now, and it only felt right to have him be a part of this record. With the album having themes of angst and nostalgia, ‘Hollywood’ felt like a perfect fit.”
The second track, “CD-R,” takes a reflective look back at Chaz Bear’s early days of touring in a digital era that predates the streaming services. The production on this track offers a contemplative twist on dance-pop, with hints of UK garage influences in the drum arrangements. Bear stated, “‘CD-R’ is a song that pays homage to the days before playlisting and streaming — the days when things were curated by people and not the algorithm.” Listen to both songs below.
Hole Erth will be available on 9/6 through Dead Oceans.
