The Wolfgang Press Unveil “Sad Surfer,” Their First New Song In 29 Years (Music on TunesDeck)

The Wolfgang Press Share “Sad Surfer,” First New Song In 29 Years

The Wolfgang Press, known for their sample-heavy UK post-punk sound, were a prominent part of the 4AD Records roster during the ’80s and ’90s. After disbanding following their 1995 album release Funky Little Demons, the original members Michael Allen and Andrew Gray, alongside Andrew’s brother Stephen, announced their return with a new album titled A 2nd Shape. Recently, they released the album’s debut single.

“Sad Surfer,” the first new track from Wolfgang Press in almost three decades, features an unconventional drum-machine beat, blended with guitar elements and vocals reflecting underlying anger. Even to those unfamiliar with the band’s history, there’s a reminiscent tone of Nine Inch Nails, particularly in the vocal delivery. The band shares their insight on the song:

“Sad Surfer” is among the initial songs penned for the album and draws inspiration from the Victorian artist Richard Dadd, known for his fanciful paintings of landscapes inhabited by fairies and mystical beings. Dadd infamously murdered his father, believing him to be the devil, and subsequently spent a considerable time painting while institutionalized at Bethlem and Broadmoor hospitals.

A 2nd Shape is scheduled for release on 9/27 under Downwards Records.
