The Kills, a well-known scuzz-rock duo, recently released God Games, marking their return after a significant hiatus. This Friday, they will unveil a new acoustic EP titled Happier Girls Sessions, which features mostly reimagined tracks from God Games. In addition, they have shared an acoustic cover of Billie Eilish’s “Happier Than Ever,” which debuted today.
“Happier Than Ever,” the standout track from Eilish’s 2021 album, is noted for its traditional rock vibe and popularity. Other artists such as Rina Sawayama and Black Country, New Road have performed their versions, but the Kills offer a more subdued, blues-influenced interpretation with Allison Mosshart’s distinctive vocals complemented by a soft guitar and minimal percussion. Previously, they had performed an acoustic version during a Sirius session, which led to their current electric cover. Mosshart shared her thoughts on the process:
“It’s all Sirius XM’s fault. We were asked to do an acoustic session with them last year and they’d requested a cover. I’ve always loved ‘Happier Than Ever,’ so it felt like a natural choice. After our session aired, Laurence Bell from Domino reached out, wanting us to record an electric version. Here we were in London, working on a non-electric EP, and we ended up doing an electric rendition of our acoustic cover. The more electricity, the better! Thank you, Billie, for writing such a fantastic song.”
