Introducing the Hard Quartet: A New Indie Rock Supergroup
Stephen Malkmus recently unveiled his new project, the Hard Quartet, featuring renowned indie rock musicians Matt Sweeney, Emmett Kelly, and Jim White. Their debut self-titled album is set to release next month, and fans have already enjoyed singles like “Earth Hater” and “Rio’s Song.” Today, the group has introduced a fresh track titled “Our Hometown Boy,” which carries a playful irony, considering the band members hail from different locations.
Exploring Themes in “Our Hometown Boy”
“Our Hometown Boy” showcases a vibrant folk-rock sound led by Emmett Kelly’s vocals. The lyrics tell a whimsical story of a “cloven-toed mistress” armed with a metaphorical ice pick. Accompanying this are Sweeney’s harmonies and a notable guitar solo. Kelly commented on the track:
In “Our Hometown Boy,” we reflect on the resilient souls from our beloved hideaways, inspired by a beach notorious for its strong currents. It illustrates the concept of paradise viewed from a bar during a snowstorm, etching tales of escapades and the comforts of home.
