Advance Base Unveils New Album
Owen Ashworth has revealed the upcoming album titled Horrible Occurrences, marking the first release of new original songs from Advance Base in more than six years. This follows the albums Animal Companionship released in 2018 and his 2021 cover collection Wall Of Tears & Other Songs I Didn’t Write. The new album is set to launch in December, with the initial single titled “The Year I Lived In Richmond” already available.
A Fictional Reflection
Interestingly, the Richmond referenced in the track is fictional—a place representative of Ashworth’s memories filled with negativity. The song presents a soft, minimalistic synth sound that contrasts the disturbing events occurring in this imagined town. Here’s what Ashworth shares regarding the inspiration behind the song:
I’ve never actually lived in a place called Richmond. “The Year I Lived In Richmond” reflects on my recollections of violent incidents that happened in a city I briefly called home in the early 2000s (hint: it shares the same rhythm as Richmond). I’ve been unable to verify these occurrences through online searches or discussions with friends from that time. Perhaps it was all in my imagination? The events transformed into a personal enigma, which eventually morphed into a song. It has developed a narrative more detailed than my vague memories, complete with fictional specifics and names. I’ve had some version of this song in my mind for over twenty years, and now feels like the right moment to share it.
