The Baseball Project consists of a talented group of indie rock icons, including prominent members from R.E.M., Scott McCaughey from Minus 5/Young Fresh Fellows, Steve Wynn of the Dream Syndicate, and Linda Pitmon, who is associated with Wynn & the Miracle 3 and Filthy Friends. Their music revolves around baseball themes, and they have recently released a track honoring a remarkable player.
Titled “Oh Oh Ohtani,” the song pays tribute to Shohei Ohtani, a star player for the Dodgers. Even for those who aren’t avid baseball fans, Ohtani’s impressive talents as both a striking pitcher and a phenomenal hitter have made waves. While he’s currently on a break from pitching to heal from elbow surgery, his performance as a designated hitter has been outstanding, marking a historic season where he became the first player to achieve 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in a single season. His achievements have overshadowed a recent controversy involving a betting scandal linked to his previous translator, Ippei Mizuhara.
Scott McCaughey shared his thoughts on “Oh Oh Ohtani”:
When we first released the song about Shohei Ohtani titled “New Oh In Town” from Grand Salami Time!, I compared him to legends like Babe Ruth and Sadaharu Oh, the highest home run hitter in Japan. Now, it’s clear we should view him as a uniquely extraordinary talent in baseball history. There can be no discussion about anyone else being the MVP — his value as a designated hitter is immeasurable. The Dodgers’ success this year heavily relies on him, which is why this song is dedicated entirely to him, and more will certainly follow.
