Sponge Pays Homage to Morrissey with 1994 Covers Album

Hear Sponge Take On Morrissey For New Album Of 1994 Covers

In 1994, the Detroit alternative rock group Sponge debuted with their album Rotting Piñata, featuring popular tracks like “Plowed” and “Molly (Sixteen Candles).” To mark the 30th anniversary of this significant release, they are launching 1994, an album dedicated to covering songs from that very year. The collection includes tracks from artists such as Sonic Youth, Alice In Chains, Mazzy Star, Stone Temple Pilots, Jawbox, Urge Overkill, Oasis, and Blur. Their lead single is an energetic reinterpretation of Morrissey’s “The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get.”

According to Vinnie Dombroski of Sponge:

The band explored numerous excellent tracks for this album, but the Morrissey selection really stood out and wasn’t the most predictable pick for us. That uniqueness adds to its appeal. Under the guidance of producer Tim Patalan, we’ve sped up the tempo compared to the original, giving it a vibe reminiscent of our 1999 album New Pop Sunday.
