Coming up this week, Red Hot is set to unveil a fresh Sun Ra tribute compilation titled Outer Spaceways Incorporated – Kronos Quartet & Friends Meet Sun Ra. This compilation includes a lineup of experimental music visionaries led by Kronos Quartet, honoring the legacy of the late astral jazz pioneer, Sun Ra. Previous releases have showcased covers by Kronos Quartet featuring Laraaji, Georgia Anne Muldrow, and Jacob Garchik. Additionally, the album highlights renowned artists like Laurie Anderson and Jlin. Today, we have the opportunity to listen to RP Boo and Armand Hammer’s rendition using Sun Ra samples.
The newly unveiled track “Blood Running High” marks the inaugural collaboration between RP Boo, the groundbreaking figure in Chicago footwork, and Armand Hammer, the collective comprising New York’s abstract rap geniuses billy woods and Elucid. The song presents a raw, intense sound, seemingly veering in multiple directions simultaneously, with its ventures into relatively conventional jazz creating some of the most disorienting moments. Feel free to tune in below.
In addition, Red Hot has also unveiled “Kiss Yo’ Ass Goodbye,” a 10-minute composition by the Kronos Quartet in collaboration with minimalist pioneer Terry Riley and Japanese improviser Sara Miyamoto. This innovative take on Sun Ra’s 1984 cosmic classic “Nuclear War” pushes boundaries even further. Check it out below.
Outer Spaceways Incorporated – Kronos Quartet & Friends Meet Sun Ra will be released on 6/21 by Red Hot.
