Richard Russell, the producer and founder of XL Recordings, has recently been sharing music under the name Everything Is Recorded. This project features various artists across different genres, reminiscent of collaborations by UNKLE or Gorillaz. His latest endeavor is quite intriguing.
Russell has long respected Bill Callahan, especially after the song “I’m New Here” from Callahan’s Smog became the title track for Gil Scott-Heron’s last album produced by Russell. When working on a forthcoming Everything Is Recorded album at the iconic Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, Russell reached out to Callahan to ask who he would like to collaborate with. Callahan suggested Noah Cyrus, leading to this new project.
The resulting song, titled “Porcupine Tattoo,” is the lead track on a new 7″ vinyl from Everything Is Recorded, which features Callahan on both songs. The second track, “Norm” (not yet released), is a solo piece by Callahan dedicated to the late Norm Macdonald. “Porcupine Tattoo” offers a minimalist folk vibe with subtle gospel influences, showcasing Cyrus alongside Callahan’s deepened vocals. The song opens with the lines, “I don’t want to be your God. I don’t even want to be Godly.”

The digital release of “Porcupine Tattoo” b/w “Norm” is available now, with a limited edition vinyl set to be released soon through XL in collaboration with Callahan’s longstanding label, Drag City.
