A fresh NYC indie rock band, My Wonderful Boyfriend, draws inspiration from iconic artists like Pavement, Big Star, and Blur. Their latest single, “My New Shirt,” off the upcoming EP Mr. Authenticity Speaks, embodies a blend of vibrant keyboard tunes, lively guitar riffs, and P.J. McCormick’s gritty vocals. Initially reminiscent of a fusion between Pavement and emo with a touch of power-pop, the track evolves into a reminiscent sound of early Modest Mouse, Built To Spill, and Cymbals Eat Guitars in its second half. McCormick describes the song as a reflection on a disintegrating relationship’s final car ride, realizing you’re a bystander in your own life amidst indulgence and revelry that leads you to this moment (or perhaps out of it).
“My New Shirt” is a song about the last car ride you take as a couple when it’s sort of all falling apart. It’s about the moment you figure out you’re riding passenger in your own life, and you’re like: oh, shoot. And the hubris and partying that can get you there (and maybe get you out).
