Lindsay Reamer transitioned from a field scientist to an indie musician between 2019 to 2023. She recently introduced her debut full-length album, Natural Science, influenced by her experiences gathering data in National Parks. The first single, “Figs And Peaches”, is now available for listeners.
Reflecting on the origin of the song, Reamer shared that it stemmed from her encounter with a trail sign discussing invasive plants along the Natchez Trace in Mississippi. She further delved into the inspiration behind the track:
She learned about Japanese Stiltgrass, brought to North America as packing material for porcelain shipments in the early 20th century, which is now widespread east of Texas. Additionally, she touched on the folklore tied to the B. L. England Generating Station in South Jersey, exploring unintended consequences, a prevalent theme in environmental history.
The song resonates with the idea of individual impact on the surroundings, either positively or negatively. Reamer emphasizes taking ownership of actions and outcomes rather than waiting passively. “Figs And Peaches” is portrayed as the most dynamic piece on the album, featuring Eliza Niemi on cello, adding depth to the composition.
Natural Science involves numerous collaborators contributing their talents to the project, enriching the musical tapestry. The album boasts tracks such as “Today”, “Spring Song”, “Sugar”, and a cover of Townes Van Zandt’s “Heavenly Houseboat Blues”. The music video for “Figs And Peaches” is also available for viewing.
