Review of Ice Spice’s First Album Y2K!

Ice Spice’s Debut Album Y2K! Is Both Inessential And Fun

Ice Spice has finally released her debut album. After rising to fame with the viral sensation “Munch,” she has experienced various levels of online popularity and criticism. Despite achieving significant milestones such as creating hit songs, securing a Dunkin’ Donuts drink collaboration, and appearing in the Super Bowl, Ice Spice had yet to release an album. Now, with the arrival of her album, it’s clear that it won’t change anyone’s opinion of her. For existing fans, this is a positive outcome.

Y2K! by Ice Spice is on a smaller scale compared to typical pop star releases. The album doesn’t mark a new era. The Ice Spice portrayed in Y2K!, with her rhythmic rap style focused on topics like body image and relationship drama, remains consistent with her previous work such as the “Munch” video.

Featuring only 10 tracks, with four already released as singles like “Think U The Shit (Fart)” and “Gimmie A Light,” Y2K! clocks in at 23 minutes, shorter than some EPs. Collaborations with Travis Scott and Gunna are present, reflecting Ice Spice’s familiar sound. While some may have hoped for a more diverse offering, the album stays true to her established style.

Ice Spice opts for a lively, entertaining rap album that doesn’t aim for mainstream appeal. With well-executed club beats and confident delivery, she showcases her specific style effectively. Y2K! asserts her prowess in this niche. Listen to the album below.

Y2K! is now available from 10K Projects/Capitol.
