Review of Ethel Cain’s Cover of “For Sure” by American Football

Ethel Cain – “For Sure” (American Football Cover)

American Football released their self-titled debut album 25 years ago and are commemorating it with a covers album. Ethel Cain, known for her alternative pop style, has now shared her captivating version of “For Sure,” following Iron & Wine’s rendition of “Never Meant.”

Expressing her enthusiasm for the song, Cain stated:

The track ‘For Sure’ has always captivated me whenever I listen to the album. I envisioned how I could infuse it with my own sound. My favorite part of the song is the train passing by the apartment I used to live in Pennsylvania, creating a synth-like effect at the beginning and end. American Football’s debut left a lasting impact and remains a timeless classic that resonates with me as strongly now at 20 as it did when it was first released. Their musical storytelling has been a great influence on me, making it an honor to contribute to this cover album. American Football’s legacy lives on.

Steve Lamos of American Football reflected on the song, highlighting its theme of change and uncertainty. He praised Cain’s interpretation, saying, “She has managed to deepen the emotional depth and yearning of the original track, enhancing the ‘ooooohs’ and ‘aaaaahs’ to create a profound effect.”

Cain’s rendition was discovered by Lamos through a student who analyzed her song “American Teenager” for its rich sonic textures and emotional lyrics. He commended her meticulous approach in transforming “For Sure” with a similar dedication to detail.
