Review of Downhaul’s Latest Single “Sleep In The Sunroom”

Downhaul – “Sleep In The Sunroom”

Downhaul, the indie-rock band from Richmond, is set to drop their upcoming album “How To Begin” later this month, featuring the already-released tracks “Sinker” and “Solstice.” Today, they give us a taste of what’s to come with their latest single, “Sleep In The Sunroom,” a delightful and jangly tune.

Gordon Phillips shared his thoughts on “Sleep In The Sunroom.”

In crafting this song, I aimed for a ‘don’t bore us, get to the chorus’ approach — a style I’ve struggled with in the past. Drawing inspiration from the mid-2000s songwriter-focused indie/punk scene, I refined the song’s structure multiple times during the writing process to achieve the most impactful presentation. I believe we found the right balance. The lead guitar’s bending motif, created by Robbie after each chorus, elevates the energy subtly and effectively. While we aimed to limit overdubs on our new record, the addition of tambourine in this track felt essential.

How To Begin will be available on 9/20 via Self Aware.
