An announcement of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s latest project Flight b741 was made earlier this month alongside the release of the lead single “Le Risque.” Today, the psych-rock band presents “Hog Calling Contest” and a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the album.
Regarding “Hog Calling Contest,” the band shared, “While recording Flight b741, we sometimes engaged in these highly inspired tune-up sessions. Although we were not actively recording during these instances, one of these moments was captured. ‘Daily Blues’ also came about in a similar fashion. However, ‘Hog Calling Contest’ has a distinctive rawness that emerges when jamming with friends, unaware of being recorded. Blissful chaos!”
The mini-documentary, titled Oink Oink Flight b741: The Making Of…, was directed by Guy Tyzack who said,
“We were commissioned to document the band creating an album from scratch within two weeks. They intentionally had minimal preparation for the recordings, making it challenging for me to anticipate what to film. I simply knew they would be in one room, with three of them possibly leaving at any moment due to imminent baby arrivals. The room appeared dull and brown, so I transformed it to resemble the sky, aligning with the album’s theme, in a 17-hour frenzy with three friends and a case of lagers.”
