In 2019, the artist who was once known as Olivia Neutron-John faced legal action from the estate of the singer Olivia Newton-John. After taking time to refresh and redefine their musical persona, Anno is set to release a self-titled debut album this November, with the lead single “disco” already available.
“Coming back with a self-titled album felt like the right move,” Anno stated in a press release. Reflecting on the creation of the album—recorded in their home studio—they shared, “I revisited the excitement that ignited my music career at 17, capturing the essence of those early moments that led me on my journey. This album pays tribute to the deep hope that has guided me to this point.”
The track “disco,” featuring a verse by Nappynappa from model home, captures the spirit of youthful exuberance and newfound liberation. It’s a minimalist yet impactful dance track, drawing inspiration from disco icons like Grace Jones, with catchy lyrics like: “Whole time lost in this rhythm/ Don’t you know you’re in my system?”
The video for “disco,” which contains some mature content, was directed by Jae Matthews of Boy Harsher. Check it out along with the album’s tracklist below.
