The nonprofit production company Red Hot is set to release a 46-track compilation called TRAИƧA, which includes contributions from various artists like Sade, Grouper, André 3000, and Adrianne Lenker. The compilation is scheduled to be available on Sept. 22, with a cover of Prince’s “I Would Die 4 U” by Lauren Auder and Wendy and Lisa already released.
TRAИƧA comprises original songs, covers, and features from a lineup including Jeff Tweedy, Perfume Genius, Clairo, Allison Russell, Faye Webster, Sam Smith, Lightning Bug, Sharon Van Etten, Kelela, Babehoven, Fleet Foxes, Moses Sumney, and many more. Sade’s contribution marks her first new song in 14 years, dedicated to her trans son, Izaak, while André 3000’s piece spans 30 minutes.
The concept for the project emerged in 2021, following SOPHIE’s passing, as Dust Reid sought to highlight trans and non-binary artists. Reid expressed the project’s aim:
The intention was to celebrate the contributions of trans artists to the world and emphasize their leadership role, especially in navigating their gender identities. The hope is for this celebration to resonate with everyone, regardless of identity, fostering a future founded on community, collaboration, care, and healing.
In reflection on her cover of “I Would Die 4 U,” Auder shared:
As a lifelong fan of Prince, I felt compelled to take on the challenge of covering one of his songs. The potency and open-endedness of the lyrics in “I Would Die 4 U” convey an unconditional message of support and holding. Collaborating with Wendy and Lisa, who were part of the original song, has been a significant milestone in my musical journey.
Adding to this sentiment, Wendy and Lisa commented:
Being fans of Prince ourselves, we acknowledge the difficulty in covering his songs, especially personal favorites like “I Would Die 4 U.” Lauren’s voice and creative sensibilities resonated with us, and we were pleased to contribute to making this rendition special. We believe Prince would appreciate the innovation in this version of the song.
