Opeth, the veteran Swedish prog-metal band, is set to release their 14th album titled The Last Will & Testament, marking a five-year gap since their last album, In Cauda Venenum. This forthcoming album features contributions from Jethro Tull leader Ian Anderson on flute and narration, as well as Europe’s Joey Tempest on one track, creating anticipation for this collaboration.
The concept behind The Last Will & Testament explores a post-World War I narrative where a wealthy individual’s death unveils long-concealed family secrets through the reading of the will. The lead single “§1” presents a condensed version in its “radio edit” form, showcasing Opeth’s signature blend of intense heavy segments and tranquil orchestral interludes.
In reference to the new album, frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt reflects on themes of family dynamics, inheritance conflicts, and betrayal, drawing inspiration from real-life events and the TV series Succession. Åkerfeldt’s insights add depth and complexity to the album’s storytelling.
