Heems, also known as Himanshu Suri, recently dropped his first solo album in almost a decade titled Lafandar, which was well-received as our Album Of The Week. Now, he is teasing his upcoming album, Veena LP, by releasing the single “Manto” produced by Sid Vashi and featuring Vijay Iyer.
The music video for “Manto” was directed by Nardeep Khurmi, who shared his excitement about collaborating with Heems and the inspiration behind the song.
Khurmi expressed his admiration for Heems and how the project evolved from a tribute to artist Joseph Cornell to exploring inherited trauma and honoring the sacrifices made by the women who raised them.
Heems explained that the song draws influences from artists like Joseph Cornell and Guru Dutt and delves into themes of intergenerational trauma and the impact of historical events like the Partition of India.
The album Veena LP boasts an impressive lineup of guest appearances including Hasan Minhaj, Cool Calm Pete, and Mr. Cheeks, along with voicemails from industry peers like Tony Kanal, Zoya Akhtar, and Riz Ahmed. The song “Manto” also features in the tracklist of the album which is set to release on 8/23 under his own label, Veena Sounds.
