Nap Eyes Previews New Album with “Dark Mystery Enigma Bird”
The acclaimed indie rock band Nap Eyes is set to release their latest album, The Neon Gate, in just a few weeks, marking their return after a four-year hiatus. Fans have already been treated to several tracks like “Feline Race Wave” and “Ice Grass Underpass,” and now they have something new to enjoy.
Their latest single, “Dark Mystery Enigma Bird,” features a laid-back rhythm reminiscent of Destroyer, and comes with an imaginative animated music video crafted by Dr. Cool. In Dr. Cool’s own words:
The inspiration behind my videos always starts with the song. Upon hearing this delightful, warm piece, I instantly knew it would be a joy to animate. Listening to it repeatedly for months was truly a pleasure, so thank you, Nap Eyes! I believe this song has the power to evoke emotion—perhaps even a tear, but not from sadness; rather, it’s a tear you might get from enjoying a sunny day as spring break ends. My focus for the animation was to capture joyful bursts of sunlight and the feeling of a day going perfectly, even with a few twists along the way.
Chapman praised Dr. Cool, noting the video’s vivid creativity:
Dr. Cool’s visual imagination is genuinely impressive and impactful. We’re incredibly fortunate to collaborate with him and appreciate the immense effort that went into bringing this story to life alongside our song “Enigma Bird.” It’s a beautiful experience for us to be part of this artistic creation.

The Neon Gate is scheduled for release on October 18, via Paper Bag/Paradise Of Bachelors.
