Mercury Rev’s Latest Release “Ancient Love” on TunesDeck

Mercury Rev – “Ancient Love”

This summer, Mercury Rev, known for their Buffalo psych-rock sound, is making a comeback with their first original album in nine years titled Born Horses. In 2019, they released a tribute LP to Bobbie Gentry, marking their latest work before this upcoming album. Earlier, we shared their first single “Patterns,” and now they have unveiled a new six-minute track called “Ancient Love.”

Inspired by beat poet Robert Creeley, Mercury Rev has taken a unique spoken-word approach in Born Horses, exemplified in “Ancient Love.” This six-minute piece features breathy spoken-word verses layered over contemplative horns and pianos. The song builds gradually, deviating from the anticipated cinematic peak into a more reflective mood-piece.

The band expressed in a press release, “Our current selves are shaped by our past thoughts and perceptions, and our present thoughts shape our future. Our life is a product of our minds, rooted in ancient love.” Take a listen below.

Born Horses is set to be released on 9/6 by Bella Union.
