Four indie folk-rockers, including Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis, Jim James, and M. Ward, came together as Monsters Of Folk fifteen years ago. The band’s reissued self-titled album features bonus tracks, including five previously unreleased songs from Oberst’s abandoned sci-fi musical project. In an interview, Oberst shared insights about the failed film adaptation of Monsters Of Folk:
STEREOGUM: You once worked on a movie script based on Monsters Of Folk. What happened to that project?
OBERST: The screenplay was completed, and music recording had begun. However, due to complications in Hollywood, the project fell through. The script required a substantial budget, making it unfeasible as an independent film.
STEREOGUM: Was the film an action piece featuring the band members?
OBERST: Yes, we were part of the film but not the central characters. The concept humorously revolved around the band’s supergroup status and the notion of escalating their endeavors beyond making music.
STEREOGUM: Any chance the screenplay will be shared?
OBERST: Unlikely.
Leading up to the album reissue announcement, Monsters Of Folk released “Disappeared,” one of the previously unreleased tracks. Now, fans can enjoy four additional songs: “Dear To The Assassin,” “Sweet Silence,” “The Living Thing,” and “Museum Guard.” Listen to them below.
The reissue of Monsters Of Folk is now available on ATO.
