During the onset of the pandemic, Laura Marling surprised many by releasing her album Song For Our Daughter earlier than planned. Following this, Marling, who had originally intended to release a new album titled Patterns In Repeat this fall, gave birth to a baby girl and decided to expedite the album’s release alongside the debut of the lead single “Patterns.”
Marling expressed:
During the initial months of parenting, I found the joy of being able to balance caring for my baby and continuing to create music. This experience of simultaneously nurturing life and crafting songs has greatly influenced the essence of Patterns In Repeat. The album delves into the intricacies of family life, the delicate bonds that hold us together, and the aspirations we have for our children that often evolve over time. This project reflects the profound beauty found in mundane domesticity and everyday experiences.
At 34 years old and 15 years into my music career with eight albums under my belt, each record encapsulates a distinct chapter of my life. With this latest release, I stand at a vantage point that presents an entirely new and profound perspective, following years dedicated to exploring womanhood and self-discovery.
In addition to her upcoming album, Marling has also started discussing songwriting on a new Substack platform and will be holding residencies in London and New York this fall. The single “Patterns” showcases Marling’s signature fingerpicked acoustic style complemented by a captivating string arrangement, evoking deep emotional responses in listeners.
