King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s New Song: “Field Of Vision”
The 26th album by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, titled “Flight b741,” is set to be released this Friday. The band, known for their psych-rock sound, has already unveiled tracks like “Le Risque” and “Hog Calling Contest,” and now, they’re offering a final glimpse with “Field Of Vision.”
Lead vocalist Stu Mackenzie recalled the inception of the song, stating, “I remember Joey sending me a voice memo of him playing that main riff on acoustic guitar.” He further elaborated on the creative process:
From his couch to mine. The arrangement was a bit more complicated originally, I think. Perhaps it was closer to the “I lied to god” bridge that came together in the end. Anyway, I don’t think I really understood it or felt the groove, but once we were recording in the studio with the others, it grooved hard. The verse and chorus changes came together quickly and in real time, and we had a tune on our hands. Joey’s baby, this song. And Joey likes to do it right.
Joey reached out to Stu post-recording sessions, expressing discontent with the track, deeming it “‘cos it’s shit”. This led to Stu and Amby working tirelessly in the studio for two days, laying down vocal parts and overdubs to salvage the song. They incorporated a unique guitar solo section with outtakes and added a blown-out guitar solo, using unconventional equipment like a $100 harmony acoustic guitar played through unexpected outboard gear. Stu reminisced, “Studios are fun.” The final product was sent to Joey with a plea to include it on the album, which he eventually embraced after redoing his parts.
The band signed off with a message: “We hope you dig it. Love stu xoxo”
