Ka, the esteemed rap artist from Brooklyn, has established a unique, independent path in his music career. Alongside his job as an FDNY captain, he produces and releases his own tracks at his own pace. His slow, immersive production style complements his rough yet thoughtful vocal delivery and intricate, suggestive lyrics. His albums often explore specific themes in depth. Recently, he unexpectedly dropped his latest project, The Thief Next To Jesus, offering a self-made video for “Such Devotion” while requiring fans to purchase wav files for access to the full album. Those unwilling to spend $20 for early listening can now enjoy streaming the album.
As someone who isn’t currently able to splurge, I’m giving The Thief Next To Jesus my initial listen without a thorough critique. However, it’s clear that gospel influences abound throughout, reflecting a complex interaction with themes of Christianity. As always, the album sounds incredible, and I’m excited to delve deeper into it.
Typically, when releasing a new project, Ka appears on the streets of New York to personally sell physical copies to his audience. This time, he has scheduled a pop-up event in Manhattan on 9/28. At this event, attendees can purchase vinyl records, CDs, apparel, and other merchandise. He has also unveiled a self-directed music video for “Borrowed Time,” featuring the atmospheric black-and-white style that has become his signature look. Check out the album and the video below.
